Outdoor clothing for women has come a long way in the past decade. Contemporary brands specializing in ski, hiking, and running apparel are not only prioritizing high-performance fabrics, but style too.

Halfdays, the brainchild of former Olympian Kiley McKinnon and Ariana Ferwerda, made its debut in 2020, and its candy-colored puffer coats and matching bib pants quickly became a hit among skiers. Since then, the label has expanded, adding a robust hiking collection as well as a UV edit that provides another layer of protection from harsh solar rays. Its popularity has been growing around the globe, including buzzy pop-ups in New York and Paris.

The brand just released a new fall collection in shades like americano, chardonnay, and rouge. I recently had a chance to test-drive the collection firsthand while hiking in Hudson, New York. Ahead, see how my favorite pieces held up—both on and off the trail.

The Irene Pant, which is new to the collection, offers up a sleek silhouette, with tonal track stripes along the double-weave brushed-back leg. The straight-fit cut feels contemporary while also being practical. I wore these on a hike to the Kaaterskill Falls, and they kept me cool and dry while trekking across slippery rocks.

Our reward for making it to the waterfall? Getting sprayed from head to toe. Luckily, the water-repellent fabric held up incredibly well, drying nearly completely by the time we made it back to the car.

Off the trail, I swapped my boots for a pair of strappy sandals before taking a little walk down Warren Street while the sun was still out, and the track pants felt perfectly in place.

The Rebecca Half-Zip Fleece

I also wore the Rebecca Half-Zip fleece on my morning hike because the weather forecast looked a little chilly, but in reality, it was very humid. I wore only a sports bra underneath and was grateful to discover the thermo-regulating Dricomfort Geo 365–infused fabric actually lived up to its description. The technology relies on mineral molecules, which actively pull excess heat and moisture off the skin, keeping body temperature level at each stage of movement. So even when my face was slick with sweat, my upper body felt comfortably cool and dry.

I tried the fleece in chardonnay (a buttery yellow color), which I think perfectly captures the in-between tones of late summer and early fall. While it pairs well with bright reds and white now, it’ll look equally great with dusty pinks, browns, and navy in the coming months. While its utility as a workout top was proven on the trail, I also plan to wear it with slacks and midi pencil skirts to the office.

The Pieper Fleece

Recently, fleece has gotten the high-fashion treatment, with brands introducing zip-ups and pullovers in all sorts of eye-catching patterns and silhouettes. This season, I think the best fleeces are the ones that keep the design simple and streamlined, perhaps with an all-over punchy color. The Pieper is water-resistant and designed to reduce pilling. It comes in an array of trendy shades, but I chose the rouge, a bright red that matches the bluish undertones of my favorite lipsticks. It’s a soft, slipover style that is perfect for chilly mornings or days in the office when the AC is on blast.
