1

Fitzwilliam Darcy, Pride and Prejudice

Colin Firth

Initially coming off as self-righteous, judgmental, and proud, Mr. Darcy breaks through his first impression to prove himself a dedicated, caring, sharp, endearingly socially awkward, and oh-so-dreamy stand-up guy, who saves protagonist Elizabeth Bennet’s family from ruin. His quiet protection, affinity for yearning, and ability to keep up with the quick-witted Lizzy make him Austen’s most famous love interest for good reason.

Top Portrayal: Colin Firth (1995)—though special shoutout to Matthew Macfadyen’s 2005 version.

2

Captain Frederick Wentworth, Persuasion

Of all Jane Austen love interests, Persuasion’s Captain Wentworth is the only true self-made man. At the start of the story, he is a young, penniless naval officer, and the story’s heroine, Anne Elliot, is being pressured not to marry him by her family. But after he comes back from the Napoleonic Wars wealthy and bitter from Anne’s rejection, the two reconnect. This is second-chance romance at its finest.

Edward Ferrars, Sense and Sensibility

Ah, Edward Ferrars. Noble, quiet, honorable Edward Ferrars. The leading love interest of eldest Dashwood sister Elinor, he is all about his strong moral integrity. (Spoiler alert: He has a prior complicated engagement he feels he must honor.) While it can be frustrating at some points, it is his strength of character that makes him who he is—and ultimately makes him a good match for Elinor.

Top Portrayal: Hugh Grant (1995), although George MacKay’s 2026 rendition rivals it.

4

Captain Henry Tilney, Northanger Abbey

The witty, sarcastic, well-read son of the wealthy General Tilney, Captain Henry Tilney is a clergymen who feels pressure to marry for money. After he brings the equally-quick Catherine Morland home to his estate, his stern father banishes the guest, believing her to be below his own family in rank and fortune. Tilney, like all good heroes, fights back and runs off after her. In addition to his devotion, he is also just a stand-up, refreshingly down-to-earth guy with a close-knit relationship with his sister and a deep interest in women’s rights. You can’t go wrong.

George Knightley, Emma

There’s nothing like a friends-to-lovers trope. In Emma, George Knightley is the lifelong family friend of Emma Woodhouse and a rare gentleman who prefers walking to riding in a carriage. He challenges the young matchmaker for her tendencies to meddle in others’ lives and serves as her moral compass from time to time. However, in my humble opinion, he can come off as too fatherly, with one too many condescending lectures to his bride-to-be. Also, he’s 37 and Emma is 21.

Top Portrayal: Jeremy Northam (1996). Johnny Flynn’s 2020 version gets points for trying to minimize the age gap, though. And we have to give Paul Rudd some credit for his Beverly Hills version in the Emma adaptation Clueless.

6

Edmund Bertram, Mansfield Park

Fanny Price’s one true friend since childhood, Edmund is kind and caring, and after getting swept up in a false romance, he realizes he loves her. His dedication to her as a friend first and foremost earn him many points, though it is hard to forget that Fanny was only 10 years old (to his 16) when they met.

Elinor had Ferrars and Marianne had Colonel Brandon. A quiet, devoted man who was initially deemed unromantic by the passion-driven Dashwood, he proves himself time and time again as fiercely loyal and steady—a stark contrast from Marianne’s passion-driven fling, John Willoughby. Unfortunately, he is a little boring, has some unresolved trauma, and might have a savior complex.

Charles Bingley, Pride and Prejudice

pride and prejudice, simon woods, rosamund pike, 2005, c focus featurescourtesy everett collection

Another slightly boring though well-meaning love interest, Charles Bingley falls hard for the eldest Bennet sister. Unlike her sister Lizzy, Jane is known for her sweet, optimistic, patient nature, as well as her quiet, reserved temperament, which Darcy mistakes for indifference to his dear friend Bingley. Bingley essentially acquiesces to Darcy’s interference and leaves, before finding out the truth (from Darcy) and returning. A bit of a pushover, but a sweetheart at his core.

Frank Churchill, Emma

Handsome, clever, deceitful, and smooth-talking Frank Churchill courts Emma while secretly engaged to the poor and orphaned Jane Fairfax—a forbidden relationship that could cause him to become disinherited by his aunt. Actively pursuing the protagonist as a means to throw the public off course, he comes across as manipulative and selfish. Luckily, Emma doesn’t fall too hard for him, leaving her with a wounded ego but not quite a broken heart. Plus, you do have to appreciate his dedication to the actual love of his life.

Top Portrayal: Callum Turner (2020)

10

Henry Crawford, Mansfield Park

mansfield park, alessandro nivola, frances o'connor, 1999

A true player, Henry Crawford tries to seduce Fanny after having his way with her two cousins. He wants her because she’s pure, and then runs away with one of the (now married) cousins. Poor form all around, though not quite as memorably horrible as some of the other failed love interests—who managed to win the hearts of their victims.

John Willoughby, Sense and Sensibility

Wickham and Willoughby go head-to-head for Austen villain, but Dillane’s performance as Marianne Dashwood’s passionate love-bomber in Oakley’s new Sense and Sensibility lands him on top. Careless with her feelings, driven by in-the-moment lust, all around terrible at communication, and never able to leave her alone after breaking her heart, he feels way too modern to have been written back in the late 18th century. An incredible character but a horrible love interest.

Top Portrayal: Frank Dillane (2026)

12

George Wickham, Pride and Prejudice

pride and prejudice, rosamund pike, keira knightley, jena malone, rupert friend, carey mulligan, 2005, c focus featurescourtesy everett collection
©Focus Films/Courtesy Everett Collection

Although he initially appears to be a charming and handsome militia officer, George Wickham reveals himself to be a manipulative gambler who previously tried to elope with Darcy’s younger sister for her money and later preyed on the 15-year-old Bennet sister, Lydia—running away with her and threatening the family with social ruin. (Don’t worry, though, Darcy saves the day.) Manipulative and seemingly without a single shred of feeling or remorse, he is a terrifying man and an A+ villain.

Top Portrayal: Rupert Friend (2005)
