Ask any romantasy fan and they’ll tell you they’re waiting for one or two Sarah J. Maas adaptations. For a while it looked like there would be a Throne of Glass show, but that was 10 years ago. Now, millions are hoping for A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) or Crescent City series, but will these adaptations actually happen? We share the latest updates below.

Will there be a ‘Throne of Glass’ TV series?

Throne of Glass is Maas’ longest series. It consists of seven novels—Throne of Glass, Crown of Midnight, Heir of Fire, Queen of Shadows, Empire of Storms, Tower of Dawn and Kingdom of Ash—plus one novella, The Assassin’s Blade. Each book follows Aelin Ashryver Whitethorn Galathynius as she tries to get back on the Terrasen throne.

“I first got the inspiration for Throne of Glass by listening to a piece of music from Disney’s Cinderella score. I thought the music that plays when she flees the ball, and the whole scene, to be honest, was really, really dark and intense—my imagination, not surprisingly, made the jump to ‘Well, what if she had done something really bad?’” Maas told Good Reading magazine in 2022. “Then I went one step further and asked: ‘What if she was an assassin who tried to kill the Prince?’ And so the Throne of Glass was born. As I wrote over those 10 years and explored more of that assassin’s world, it became its own story, not a straight-up retelling, though Cinderella was the original spark!”

Currently, there are no plans for a Throne of Glass TV series. There was supposed to be one, and Hulu even began pre-production for it, but the project was scrapped very quickly.

Will there be an ‘ACOTAR’ TV show?

A Court of Thorns and Roses is Maas’ most popular series. There are five books in that series—A Court of Thorns and Roses, A Court of Mist and Fury, A Court of Wings and Ruin, A Court of Frost and Starlight and A Court of Silver Flames—all of which follow Feyre Archeron and her friends as they work to defend the magical land of Prythian.

Over the past couple of years, there have been many rumors about the ACOTAR TV show. Hulu had the rights for a while, but they have since been returned to the author.

“Getting the rights back to all my things has been a big part of my journey in recent years that maybe at some point soon I will talk more about, but right now my focus is on books. It’s been a little while since you guys have had something [to read], so I’m focusing on that,” Maas said on the Call Her Daddy podcast in March of this year. “I’m a type A control freak and I want to know everything about how it gets made, not because of that control, but just because I love movies. I love TV. I want to be a part of that and I want to see everything adapted the way I envision it and the way I know fans want it… I will dedicate everything that I have to make it right. I’ll be in there looking at all the design, but also, like, ‘What does it sound like?’ ’cause music plays such a big part, so the music is gonna have to be like a huge project.”

Will there be a ‘Crescent City’ TV show?

Crescent City is the most recent Maas series. There are three books—House of Earth and Blood, House of Sky and Breath and House of Flame and Shadow—all of which follow Bryce Quinlan, a half-fae, half-human, and her friends.

As of publication, there is no news on whether there will be a Crescent City TV show.
