Aircoach is to introduce double-decker buses to its fleet for the first time, almost doubling passenger capacity on its 700X service between Dublin Airport and Dublin city centre.
The new buses will replace the existing single-deck coaches operating on the route, increasing capacity from 49 to 97 passengers on each journey.
The double-deckers will operate under the new “Dublin Airport Flyer” sub-brand and will feature a distinctive purple colour scheme, which Aircoach said will make the service easier for domestic and international passengers to identify.
The move follows a period of increased demand for the 700X service, with Aircoach saying growing customer numbers prompted the fleet upgrade.
The new buses will provide additional seating during peak travel periods and greater convenience for groups travelling together.
Passengers will also be able to bring luggage onboard the buses, providing an additional security benefit.
Aircoach said the increased capacity will be achieved without requiring any additional stand space at Dublin Airport.
The company said the investment is also aimed at encouraging more people to use public transport instead of private cars, helping to reduce congestion and support more sustainable travel across Dublin.
Kim Swan, managing director of Aircoach, said the company was “thrilled” to introduce the double-decker fleet.
“This investment reflects the growing demand we have seen from passengers on this route, and our ongoing commitment to providing a modern, reliable, and comfortable service,” she said.
“With Aircoach now able to almost double our passenger capacity on every journey on this route, our double-deckers will make a real difference for our customers, particularly at peak travel times.”
Swan said the company hoped the increased capacity would encourage more passengers to choose bus travel.
“We will continue to invest in our services to ensure we remain the first-choice travel partner for those making the journey to our Island’s airports,” she added.
Ronan Fitzsimons, commercial director of Dublin Airport Authority, said the airport fully supported the introduction of the new buses.
“Reliable and high-capacity public transport links like Aircoach’s are an essential part of the passenger journey to and from Dublin airport,” he said.
He said the decision to increase seating capacity without requiring additional space on the airport campus was “both innovative and welcome”.
Aircoach has operated in partnership with Dublin Airport for more than 27 years.
The latest investment follows a £3m investment by the company in 2025 in a new luxury fleet for its 705X route connecting Derry, Belfast and Dublin.
