Well, this got off to a flying start, didn’t it? From NBC News:

Dr. Anthony Fauci declined to answer senators’ questions at a hearing Wednesday on the origins of Covid and the government’s handling of the pandemic, saying he would invoke his Fifth Amendment right to avoid the possibility that Republicans could try to use his testimony to prosecute him for perjury. The surprise decision shook up the hearing, which was expected to be contentious given Fauci’s previous public clashes with Chairman Rand Paul, R-Ky.

In his opening statement to the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, Fauci pointed to Paul’s “obvious obsession with calling for my prosecution, his repeated slanderous comments about me” and his decision to publicly release the doctor’s personal journal.

“The only conclusion I can reach is that the sole reason he is calling me before this committee is to get me to say something—anything—that could vindicate his repeated public pledges that I end up, in his words—quote—‘behind bars,’” Fauci said.

“Any reasonable person who has followed his unhinged obsession with me would readily come to the same conclusion,” he continued. “Therefore, although it pains me to do so because of the respect I have for the legislative branch of government and my decades-long record of cooperating with Congress, under the advice of my attorneys, I will invoke my right under the 5th Amendment of the Constitution to refrain from answering your questions.”

Senator Aqua Buddha achieved orbital status almost immediately.

“The committee will have to consider after this hearing what appropriate action should be taken against you for the failure to testify after being directed to do so. It’s against the law to obstruct an investigation of Congress. There will be repercussions to your refusal to testify today.”

Paul then achieved apogee when David Shertler, a Fauci attorney, attempted to intervene on behalf of the Bill of Rights.

“You’re not recognized! If you are unruly, you will be removed from the proceeding! You are not recognized, sir! Sir, you are not recognized. You are not recognized! Security! … You were told not to sit at the table. You insist on sitting at the table, and we told you you would not be recognized. … “Would you behave this way in a courtroom? No! Because the judge would put you in jail! I can’t do that today, but I can have you escorted from the premises. … This is the way Anthony Fauci wants to be remembered—for a lawyer not listening to the rules. That’s the way you want to be remembered, and that’s what you’re going to do. You are not recognized, sir! Security, please remove him from the room!”

It is very important to remember that Senator Aqua Buddha is probably the country’s leading “libertarian,” dedicated to preserving individual liberties against the power of the state. Give a “libertarian” a gavel and you end up with Joe McCarthy with bad hair. Kentucky has two senators—this guy, and a guy who may or may not be dead. Please, Kentucky. Get your act together.

(Also, it is more than a little amusing to hear Senator Aqua Buddha running the ball for an administration whose nominees repeatedly refuse to say under oath who won the election in 2020.)

But the chairman was asking for this. Usually, when you set a perjury trap, you don’t announce it in advance. Ken Starr’s people could have told him that. It also didn’t help that, on Wednesday morning, Trump’s toady Peter Navarro, the guy who went to prison for refusing to appear before Congress, was out there blabbering his uninformed opinions. Watching in the beyond, Machiavelli is having a good laugh.
