I’m an avid traveler, which means I have my on-the-go wellness routine down to a science (quite literally). But on a recent trip to Seoul, my entire travel routine changed.

To set the scene, it’s my third day in Seoul and the third morning in a row that I’ve woken up at 4 a.m.—a direct result of attempting to fight jet lag and majorly failing. This is typically when my immune system would go off the deep end, and I’d start to sense sniffles and a tickle in my throat before a full cold develops—but on this morning, there were no signs of a cold in sight. As I run through what could be the anomaly behind this sudden luck, one addition stands out: My recent adoption of Cymbiotika supplements.

What Is Liposomal Technology?

While the nutrient you’re taking is important, Shilpa Raut, the vice president of R&D at Cymbiotika, says the delivery system is equally as crucial. “Not all vitamins are created equal,” she explains. “It’s not just what you take—it’s what your body actually absorbs. Even if a label says, ‘1000 mg of vitamin C,’ your body may only absorb a fraction of that.”

That’s why Cymbiotika focuses on liposomal technology, as it’s one of the more effective delivery systems out there. “Liposomes act as delivery vehicles protecting the nutrients inside from digestive enzymes and stomach acid,” says Rachel Brief, a registered dietitian and wellness advisor at the Lanby. “When the liposomal supplement enters the body, it is more easily absorbed into the bloodstream through the small intestine because the liposomes are lipid-based, allowing them to merge seamlessly with cell membranes. This efficient delivery system ensures that more of the active ingredient is absorbed into the bloodstream.”

While liposomal delivery systems aren’t new, they have surged in popularity recently. “As consumers become more health-conscious and knowledgeable about supplements, they’re seeking better absorption and faster effects from their vitamins,” Brief explains. “The increased interest in biohacking, longevity, and optimizing personal health has also contributed to the rise of more effective supplement formats like liposomes.”

Which Supplements Are Best Delivered Through Liposomes?

Brief explains that certain ingredients are particularly well-suited for a liposomal delivery system, specifically nutrients that are less stable, more susceptible to oxidation, or more resistant to absorption. For example, vitamin C and NAD are often degraded in the digestive tract, she says, so they are more effortlessly absorbed into the bloodstream with liposomal technology. And glutathione, which is poorly absorbed with traditional delivery systems, is absorbed three times more with Cymbiotika’s liposomal delivery system, says Raut.

How I Tested It

Cymbiotika has over a dozen liposomal supplements, so I started with ingredients I already take or ones I was most curious about: Vitamin D, vitamin C, glutathione, magnesium, and sea moss. The supplement aisle can be confusing and murky, but Cymbiotika makes it easy by listing the benefits of each ingredient on the packet.
