On a recent night out, my friend Michele lamented in an Uber about her sweat, even in the dead of winter. As if on cue, the entire group shouted at her, “Have you tried Cashmere Mist?” The remainder of the ride was spent explaining the cult deodorant’s merits and practically forcing her to order it on the spot.

We’re not alone in our obsession. Oscar nominee Teyana Taylor recently told GQ that the deodorant smells “fire.” In a 2018 interview, makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic told Bazaar it was his favorite “bulletproof” deodorant, and that he heard about it from hairstylist Chris McMillan, who heard about it from Jennifer Aniston, another celebrity fan. There are Reddit threads devoted to it, and when Threads user @breerenee_x posted that she’d “finally” bought a stick, dozens of people responded with their praise. In the world of bougie deodorants, Donna Karan Cashmere Mist reigns supreme.

It’s a triumph that the product is still so popular. It was first introduced in 1994, and the category has seen a complete overhaul since. And at $32 a tube, it isn’t cheap. To compare, a tube of Dove Advanced Care costs $7.29; put another way, Cashmere Mist costs four times as much as its drugstore counterparts. So what makes this particular antiperspirant such a hot commodity 32 years after its debut?

Part of the magic stems from its unconventional start. Unlike traditional fragrance launches, the body line came first—even before the eau de parfum.

“Donna believed that wearing fragrance should be part of a ‘ritual’ and not just a spray,” says Alexander Serafine, VP sales, Americas at Interparfums, Inc., which owns the fragrance licenses for Donna Karan New York and DKNY. The range began with a body cream, a bath gel, and, of course, the deodorant, featuring notes of Moroccan jasmine, lily of the valley, and sandalwood. “The body products all smelled so amazing, and caught on with customers very quickly. Two years later, the Cashmere Mist fragrance was born,” says Serafine.

Creating a deo helped set the brand apart when people shopped the department store floor. “[Karan] gained authority and traction in the cosmetics department by focusing on body products while everyone else was focused on fragrances,” says Serafine.

Beyond that, devotees swear it is simply the best antiperspirant money can buy. “I don’t sweat when I use it. I maybe even can’t?” says beauty writer, consultant, and Trucco Journal author Anne-Marie Guarnieri, who has used it for at least 15 years. “All I know is that sweating is one less thing I think about or notice, which is nice.”

According to Walter Johnsen, VP Product Development at Interparfums, that’s because of three important factors: the active ingredient, the overall formula, and, of course, the fragrance.

Johnsen says the antiperspirant active, Aluminum Zirconium Tetrachlorohydrex Gly 15.4 percent, “really blocks sweat at the source. That’s why it works so well as both a deodorant and an antiperspirant.” In fact, the product is often recommended for super-sweaters, even those with hyperhidrosis. Although Johnsen wasn’t there for the product’s original development, he says it wasn’t necessarily intended for that purpose; instead, it was a “happy accident” that caught on over time. “Because it balances high-performance antiperspirant actives with skin-friendly, absorbent powders, it ends up working really well even for people who sweat a lot,” he says.

The texture and base of the formula are equally important to the product’s alchemy, and it’s also skin-friendly. “There are soothing ingredients like allantoin and gentle emollients, so it’s not harsh,” says Johnsen. “People can even use it after shaving without irritation.”

Finally, it’s the luxe, powdery floral fragrance that makes Cashmere Mist a class of its own. “You’re getting strong sweat protection, a pleasant texture, and a lasting, subtle scent all in one,” says Johnsen.

There’s a slight difference between the deodorant stick and that in the bottle, but some users say they even prefer it. Guarnieri calls it “not traditionally deodorant-y,” and adds that while it’s close to the perfume, there’s a skin-like quality. “It doesn’t clash or get weird with the perfumes I wear,” she says. According to Johnsen, that difference is due to the powdery base. “It’s not really a different fragrance—it’s just how the scent interacts with the formulation and your skin,” he says.

As the fragrance category continues its skyrocketing growth, scent has become even more intertwined with body-care products, including deodorant. Several other brands have taken a page from the Donna Karan playbook, launching deodorants to complement their popular scents. Case in point: Glossier introduced a deodorant inspired by its inescapable You perfume, while Sol de Janeiro has Rio Deos to go along with four of their popular perfume mists. Salt & Stone followed Donna Karan’s order of operations even more closely, launching body mists years after its popular deos had gained a following. The list goes on: Kai, Cyklar, and Phlur also sell scented deodorants.

In each of those cases, the deodorants are aluminum-free, meaning they don’t actually stop sweat, but rather combat odor. (For those concerned about using an aluminum-based antiperspirant, it’s worth noting that there are no strong human studies that link breast cancer risk and antiperspirant use, according to the American Cancer Society.)

Although Donna Karan introduced an aluminum-free Cashmere Mist formula, the original is still at the top of the bestseller leaderboard. And aside from being one of the few antiperspirants sold at Sephora, it’s also one of the priciest options on the page. But that hasn’t stopped people from buying tube after tube. For her part, Guarnieri says the product is worth the premium. “I don’t have an especially elaborate or spendy beauty routine otherwise, and a stick does seem to last a long time.”

Fans regularly sell out the product when it’s on sale, including on TikTok Shop, where the brand launched last year. “Sales were doubling and tripling day after day,” recalls Serafine, who says a halo effect was noticeable in stores and other online sales marketplaces, too.

According to Serafine, thousands of new customers continue to discover Cashmere Mist each month. “They are falling in love with our fragrance and body products and creating new rituals just as our clients have been doing for the past 32 years,” he says. “I have been in the business for 25 years and have never seen a product take off like this.”
