Facebook’s Global Blackout: What Meta Isn’t Telling You and Why It Could Shake the Digital Economy to Its Core
Ever wonder what happens when the social media giant slips on a digital banana peel? That’s right — Facebook and Messenger have just gone dark in what looks like a worldwide outage, leaving millions scratching their heads (and refreshing their browsers anxiously). It’s crazy how dependent we’ve all become on these platforms, isn’t it? While Instagram and WhatsApp, fellow Meta siblings, seem to be holding their ground for now, the core duo’s blackout has sparked a frenzy across alternative networks like X, where users vent their frustration and disbelief. Users logging in are met with the dreaded “This page isn’t available at the moment” message — a cold reminder that even the biggest players can stumble. The Meta team is already on it, but this hiccup raises a pretty intriguing question: how do we weather the storm when the very tools we build our businesses and connections on suddenly vanish? Let’s dive into the details and unpack what’s going on. LEARN MORE.
Facebook and Messenger have gone down in what appears to be a global outage.
The social media platform and its messaging app are currently unusable for members, although other Meta-owned sites, such as Instagram and WhatsApp, appear largely unaffected.
DownDetector, which tracks the real-time status of websites and online services, shows a massive spike in user reports of problems with Facebook since 2pm on Friday (12 June).
Messenger has seen a similar spike in user reports as well this afternoon, as has Instagram, although the photo-sharing platform appears to be working at the time of writing.
There have also been fewer spikes in outage reports about Instagram and WhatsApp, but both apps remain accessible.
Facebook users have taken to alternative social media sites like X (formerly Twitter) to complain that they are unable to use the site.
Users logging into Facebook will be redirected to a webpage with a message saying ‘This page isn’t available at the moment’ and ‘This may be because of a technical error that we’re working to fix. Please try reloading the page.’
Also writing on X, Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said: “We’re aware people are currently having trouble accessing our services. We’re working on it.”

Meta runs a status page for its business products, which currently shows ‘high disruptions’ for Facebook Ads Manager, Messenger API for Instagram, Messenger Platform and WhatsApp Business Platform.
All the other business products run by the group are seeing ‘no known issues’, but the company does not offer a status page for its consumer products.
