We throw around the word “Mother” quite indiscriminately these days to refer to practically any woman who we appreciate or admire. But there is no exaggeration when I say that Madonna truly is Mother.

The Queen of Pop (who still stands as the highest-selling female artist of all time) didn’t just inspire generations of legendary performers, from Britney Spears to Lady Gaga and Beyoncé—she also redefined the boundaries of pop music. And while she was hard at work reshaping an entire industry, she also somehow found the time to maintain an iconic personal life.

The Material Girl reminded us of that just this morning with the release of a new interview with Grindr (the gay dating app where, in a classic Madonna marketing move, she is currently selling an exclusive vinyl variant for her forthcoming album Confessions II). As she sat down with five of her fabulous queer besties—Ivy Mugler, Raul Lopez, Jeremy O. Harris, Bob The Drag Queen, and Marcelo Gutierrez—Madonna discussed sex, dating, and every juicy detail in between. And there was one tidbit that has truly taken the internet by storm.

It began when Lopez asked who the best person was that she’d ever shared an… intimate moment with (the exact phrasing was: “Who was your best d*ck down?”). First, Madonna said, “Oh my god.” Then, she very politely noted that she was only willing to mention someone who has passed away, in an effort to respect her surviving partners. And then, she dropped perhaps the most legendary answer possible: John F. Kennedy Jr.

Earlier this year, Love Story taught younger generations exactly how thirsted-after JFK Jr. was in the ’90s. Every show from Seinfeld to Friends referenced his sex symbol status, and before his marriage to Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, he was linked to a range of stars including Daryl Hannah, Sarah Jessica Parker, and, as we’ve now clearly established, Madonna.

Of course, this anecdote only serves as a reminder of Madonna’s epic dating history. Some may argue that Taylor Swift, Cher, or even Kendall Jenner have the best dating roster, but Madonna’s relationship history reads like a who’s-who of the late 20th-century zeitgeist.

Let’s revisit the list shall we? There was neo-expressionist artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, and actors Sean Penn (whom she was married to from 1985–1989), Tony Ward, Warren Beatty, and Luke Perry. Who could forget directors Guy Ritchie (whom she was also married to from 2000–2008) and Dan Gilroy, or rappers Tupac Shakur and Vanilla Ice, NBA star Dennis Rodman, or Yankees player Alex Rodriguez? Heck, she was even linked to Michael Jackson after the two attended the 1991 Oscars together (though it was later written off as a publicity stunt).

Historically, men have been celebrated for their so-called little black books, but women have been criticized or mocked. But from the moment she burst onto the scene in her “Boy Toy” belt, Madonna has always made it clear that she has no interest in bending to misogynistic standards about how women ought to behave. It’s a testament to Madonna’s sheer magnetism, her impact, and her aura that so many of her famous contemporaries were drawn to her. She has lived a rich and, dare I say, gaggy romantic life, and that is certainly something to celebrate.
