Unlock Next-Level Endurance: The 8 Hydration Vests Every Runner and Hiker Wishes They Knew About Sooner

Ever wonder if there’s a hydration vest out there that actually gets you—like, really understands the chaos of marathon training and the desperate need to stash every snack and gadget without feeling like you’re packing for Everest? Well, the Salomon Adv Skin 12 sure tries to be your ultimate sidekick on those grueling long runs. Picture this: two 500 mL soft flasks snugly hugging your back, pockets sprawling more than your grandpa’s fishing vest, and zippers slick enough to open on the fly without stopping mid-stride. Sounds like a hydration dream, right? I put this vest through the wringer last summer, and honestly, it’s like it reads your mind—keeping you hydrated, organized, and comfortable whether you’re pushing miles or just out for a jog. Sure, it’s not perfect (those armholes could use a bit more space!), but when it comes to balancing storage and comfort, Salomon nailed it. The Salomon Adv Skin 12 Hydration Vest is packed with features to keep you hydrated and comfortable on long runs. This vest comes with two 500 mL soft flasks, with two roomy pockets in back that are large enough to hold even more liquids. There are zippered and elastic pockets for days in front and back, giving you plenty of space to hold everything from gel packets and chews to your phone. The zippers go up and down easily, too—no need to stop your run to make sure you get in and out of them.

Associate Editor Olivia Luppino used it all last summer for marathon training, “It allowed me to bring plenty of water on my long runs and stored all my gels, electrolyte tabs, and phone with ease and without feeling bulky. I really appreciate how many pockets it has too. It helped me keep everything organized.”

This vest is incredibly comfortable thanks to its blend of polyamide and stretchy elastane. The bungee cords in front create a snug-enough feel that keeps everything in place without making it feel like you’re being restricted. I appreciate that the soft flasks have a sturdy elastic within their holder pocket to make sure there’s no chance they’ll slide out if you, say, bend over to tie your sneaker. The flasks are also perfectly positioned for you to lean over a little to take a sip without messing with your flow.

It’s hard to find anything wrong with this vest, but there are a few things to point out. While they have a soft reinforced seam, the armholes are on the smaller side. If you have larger arms and are between sizes, I’d size up or plan to use Body Glide or a similar anti-chafe product until you get used to it. Luppino recommends always wearing a short sleeve shirt to protect yourself. This is minor, but the downside of those spacious back pockets is that they create a rounded look on your shoulders. Ultimately, I felt like the extra storage space was worth it, though.
