I’m simply not interested in sweating through my clothes. I’m trying to stay cool, and dry, and sweat stain-free for as much of the warmer months as I can. And if I’m going to work? Dinner? Anywhere I most definitely don’t want to be sweating through said clothes? Forget it.

Linen is the best fabric for this. The thin and moisture-wicking fibers create are woven into airy, lightweight fabrics that are perfect for summer. And that crumpled look it gets…chef’s kiss. The more linen you have, the better.

Here, we’ve gone through our favorite ways to wear linen—sometimes all together, sometimes separately—and all the places we might wear it to. We’re packing our pull-on shorts for vacation and swapping in linen chore jackets when we have to head to work. Here’s how to get all done up in airy linen. You’ll be as cool-looking and -feeling as it gets.

Linen Pants

The first linen swap we’re making as soon as it starts heating up is pants. Heavy denim and canvas are simply too hot, sucking in hot air and not letting it go anywhere. Super gauzy linens are better for weekends and wearing near the beach, but linen dress pants are about as good as it gets for work. Those slightly more tailored linen pants are great options for summer weddings and nicer events.

Linen Shirts

Perhaps you thought linen clothing stopped and started with linen shirts. And philosophically, that’s true. A great linen shirt is an absolute staple, and we recommend one long sleeve and one short sleeve to give your summer wardrobe some range. We love these because you can have fun with them. Go simple with a solid colored long sleeve that you can wear over a T-shirt—one that works well as an extra layer, too, when you’re traveling or going from the hot sun to A/C.

Short sleeve linen shirts can be super casual (if you, say, leave that camp collar wide open) or you can tuck them into pants with a belt for a real Fashion Guy look. The simple linen shirt is also a great option for people like me who refuse to give up dark colors in the sun.

Linen T-Shirts

With all due respect to cotton T-shirts, a slight fabric update can make your favorite fit more wearable for long stretches outside. Linen is airy and breathable, which feels great, but it also wrinkles a lot, and quickly. A linen T-shirt can easily look sloppy. Here, it is generally better to get a higher quality construction (meaning, more expensive) because it is going to drape nicely and not look like you walked out of the house in your PJs. For these, either full linen or a cotton-linen blend is best.

Linen Shorts

Where linen shirts can look casual because they are more laid back, linen shorts tend to look more pulled together than other short options. Maybe that’s because the other options are extremely casual (denim, nylon) or golf-adjacent (chinos) and it can be pretty hard to find something in between.

Linen shorts are a solid option: they are more relaxed than a chino, more pulled together than an athletic short, and more breathable than any other option. Pull-ons are the best, according to our preferences, but the more tailored ones are also nice. Great for feeling like you’ve avoided being trapped in pants but also not like you’re dressed too young.

Linen Jackets

Last year, I bought the linen version of a jacket I wear all the time for work, and it was one of the smartest decisions I’ve made product-wise in a while. I hate how underdressed I tend to feel in the summer. Minimal layers not only dresses you down—it makes an outfit boring, as far as I’m concerned. But a linen jacket gives you a layer option that doesn’t feel insane to wear in the summer, is easy to pack, and doesn’t feel too overdone. If you work in an office or face a similar layerless existential crisis, a single linen jacket will make your whole summer wardrobe feel brand new.
