From precise bob cuts to “Ballerina off-duty buns”, there are a number of hairstyle ideas primed to help keep you cool this summer. And while Bazaar editors are keeping close tabs on the popularity of micro braids, there’s another braid trend this season that’s currently on the rise: the regal and sophisticated Halo braid. Usually anchored by a center part, the crown-like updo consists of one or more single braids wrapped around the circumference of the head like an ethereal halo.
Similar hairstyles trace back to ancient Greece and Italy, which is one reason Halo braids have been worn repeatedly on the red carpet by stars of The Odyssey. During the Paris premiere of the film, Zendaya wore a two-row version of the trend that kept the hair off her neck, crafted by her long-time hairstylist Coree Moreno. The star also wore the Halo braid with more relaxed half-up, half-down styling, with extensions, at the movie’s London premiere this month.
Zendaya’s Odyssey co-star Anne Hathaway has also opted to wear a Halo braid on the red carpet this season. Strategically placed within her effortless updo at the movie’s New York City premiere yesterday, celebrity hairstylist Orlando Pita used a pair of fishtail braids to secure the star’s relaxed chignon.
“Looking every bit like Queen Penelope of Ithaca, she exudes a regal freshness that effortlessly enhances her beauty through stylish outfits, makeup, nails, and hairstyles that empower her,” Pita writes in an Instagram post about the look.
The Odyssey cast aren’t the only stars getting in on the summer beauty trend. Jennifer Lopez was recently spotted in an elevated version of the look, complete with a jewel-adorned braided bun, styled by Justine Marjan for Dolce&Gabbana’s Alta Moda 2026 show in Sicily. Marjan added softness to the look by incorporating wispy side pieces with a slight bend.
Whether you’re looking to channel your inner Greek goddess or just looking for a different take on your go-to updo, the Halo braid makes it a no-brainer. With The Odyssey’s highly anticipated release this week, we’re betting we’ll continue more and more takes on the trend through the end of summer and beyond.
