For many, henleys may bring to mind visuals of burly men in faded denim and lightly dusted boots, but the laid-back silhouette has its origins in a slightly more refined context. Invented in the 19th century as a men’s undergarment, the collarless shirt with a distinct placket of two or more buttons was adopted by rowers at the English Royal Regatta in Henley-on-Thames, where it quickly became associated with the water sport.

The style was often made from materials like cotton and wool, which offered comfort and enhanced breathability for the sport and largely stayed in the realm of athletics until the 1970s. This is when Ralph Lauren introduced his own version, cut slim and close to the body, blending together English sensibilities with American charm.
